I have stayed at Casa Barichara about ten times over the last seven years.
I have come with my wife, family, our content team, and other travelers. The reason I keep returning starts with the location.
Casa Barichara sits at the top of the most beautiful street I know in Colombia.
Step outside the front door and Barichara is immediately below you. Stone streets descend toward the plaza. Red-tiled roofs fill the view. The Andes rise beyond town.
You are not using the hotel as a base from which to reach Barichara.
You are already in it.
A Hotel That Feels More Like a House
Casa Barichara has seven guest rooms, but the center of the property is a large indoor-outdoor living area with views over town.
That layout becomes especially valuable during a full buyout.
Everyone has a private room to retreat to, while the living room, dining table, kitchen, terraces, staff, and small swimming pool give the group a natural place to spend time together.
It feels less like taking over a hotel and more like having a staffed private house in Barichara.
Without a buyout, the same social character remains. Breakfast is served around one long rustic table shared with the other guests.
An Owner Who Still Shows Up
María Elvira Echeverri lives in Barichara and visits the property regularly.
She reminds me of an elegant friend stopping by the house to say hello and make sure you know that she and her staff are there if you need anything.
That presence separates Casa Barichara from boutique hotels where ownership feels more distant. You can actually meet the person behind the property.
María Elvira is also active in sustainable tourism initiatives, and Casa Barichara has received recognition through Colombia’s Sembradores de Paz program.
Rustic, Comfortable, and Personal
Casa Barichara is not shiny, modern, five-star luxury.
The rooms are rustic in character, clean, very comfortable, and decorated with materials that feel connected to the region.
My favorite is now the suite in the upper main house.
It was not always my first choice. The room borders the street, which attracts plenty of people taking photographs, especially around sunset, and noise used to be a consideration.
The hotel has since installed soundproof windows. I have stayed in the suite for several nights after the change, and the issue has been resolved in my experience.
The suite has a private balcony overlooking Barichara, with a small tree reaching over the terrace, a large bed, and a generous bathroom. For a couple, or a couple traveling with a young child, it would be my first choice.
There are also two newer rooms lower in the property near the entrance. They are more contemporary, although I prefer the character of the rooms in the main house.
Barichara Outside the Door
Mornings can begin with low clouds lifting over the rooftops, with the Andes behind them. Church bells carry up from town during the day.
In the evening, I like having a cocktail while looking across Barichara. During one of our content shoots, we also photographed and filmed a private cocktail class with a local bartender who came to the property for our group.
The location does come with one physical reality: Casa Barichara sits at the top of a steep street.
For me, the location and view are worth the climb.
Why We Choose It
Casa Barichara works especially well for couples who want an intimate stay in the center of town and for families or small groups who can take over all seven rooms.
The distinction from Finca San Pedro, another Barichara property we recommend, is simple.
Finca San Pedro gives you a quieter relationship with nature outside town.
Casa Barichara puts you in the middle of Barichara itself.
After roughly ten stays, that remains the reason I return.
Open the front door, and the town is already there.
