DO - The Drift | Cartagena, Colombia
DO showcases journeys that unfold like a story, open doors to hidden worlds, and introduce guests to people, places, and ideas they wouldn’t find on their own.
DO: One-of-a-kind experiences we design for guests.
The Drift
Cartagena has always been a city tied to the sea.
Pirates, merchants, fishermen, and explorers have passed through these waters for centuries. The rhythm of the Caribbean still shapes life here, just as it always has.
The Drift begins aboard the Moana Lounge, a salvaged and restored boat that now moves quietly through the protected waters outside the old city.
There’s no rush.
The sail out of Cartagena is slow and deliberate, the skyline fading behind you as the Caribbean opens in every direction.
Eventually, the boat drops anchor in a quiet bay where the water relaxes, and the mangroves begin.
What Guests Experience
Sailing the Caribbean aboard the restored Moana Lounge as Cartagena’s skyline slowly fades behind you.
Planting mangroves along a protected coastline contributes to the regeneration of vital marine ecosystems.
A relaxed beach picnic featuring locally sourced Caribbean ingredients.
Diving beneath the surface to retrieve artisanal rum bottles that have been curing under the sea for three months.
A private rum tasting on deck as the boat drifts back toward Cartagena at sunset.
Planting Mangroves: A Living Coastline
A crab disappears into the mangrove roots as the tide slides slowly through the sand. Mangroves are one of nature’s quiet powerhouses.
Their roots stabilize coastlines, protect against erosion, and create nurseries for fish, crabs, and countless other species that depend on the shelter of their tangled branches.
Here, guests step ashore and take part in something simple but meaningful: planting mangroves along the shoreline.
Hands in the sand. Roots pressed into place. A small act that will quietly reshape the coastline over time.
Every tree strengthens the living barrier that protects these fragile Caribbean ecosystems.
A Picnic by the Sea
After the planting, the mood shifts.
A locally sourced picnic is laid out along the shore, fresh Caribbean flavors meant to be shared casually between swims and conversation.
The mangroves rustle in the breeze. The sea stays warm. Time stretches a little longer than expected.
Rum Beneath the Waves
The sea is holding one more surprise.
Months earlier, bottles of artisanal Colombian rum were lowered beneath the surface and left to cure in the cool underwater currents.
Now it’s time to retrieve them.
Your crew pulls the bottles from their resting place beneath the waves.
Each bottle carries the subtle imprint of the sea, aged gently below the surface for three months.
Back on deck, the corks are opened.
Glasses are poured.
And the tasting begins as the boat slowly drifts back toward Cartagena.
Field Note
The idea for The Drift happened almost by accident.
In October 2025, WhereNext launched its first proprietary content shoot in Colombia, part of a long-term effort to build the country’s first luxury travel content library. During the shoot, our DMC partner Maria del Puerto offered one of their boats for a day on the water. We brought along real travelers and guides from Cartagena as models, and the energy on board felt natural and unscripted.
A few weeks later, WhereNext founder Gregg Bleakney and Maria del Puerto founder Nicolás Kraliczek reconnected and began talking about the day on the water.
What started as a filming day slowly became an experience.
Now it’s The Drift.
Designed by WhereNext
The Drift is a WhereNext Travel Colombia journey co-designed with our partner Maria del Puerto, whose restored vessel, Moana Lounge, carries a piece of Cartagena’s maritime past back onto the water. Slow sailing through protected bays, planting mangroves along the shoreline, and diving beneath the Caribbean to retrieve rum bottles curing below the waves—together these moments weave conservation, culture, and celebration into a single afternoon at sea.
If you're curious about the remarkable origin of the boat and the artist behind its transformation, we recommend reading the story behind it here:
